American Literature
The goal of this course is to give you an overview of the development of American Literature from its beginnings to today. In this course an effort will be made not only to acquaint you with some of the most influential authors and their works, but also the historical and literary context in which their works were created. Central themes spanning the years from America’s foundation to our present day will be explored and discussed. During the first two weeks, all students will be reading and discussing the same works. Starting in week 3, you will be given choices in the readings so that you can pursue your own personal interests, and subsequently share your expertise on the works of your choice both with the students who read the same works and with those classmates who chose to read other texts.
